Folklore:
In the indigenous folk magic of North America it is used for protection from those who wish you harm, protection from curses and the evil eye, and for curse breaking. The Haudenosaunee in particular use it to protect from witches and witchcraft.
Many ancient cultures including the Mesoamericans and pre-contact native tribes of the American southeast associated water lilies with the underworld and the moon and believed they were sacred and purifying and used them to cleanse themselves before prayer and communion with deities, nature spirits, and the ancestors.
In European folk magic yellow pond lily is associated with the planet Venus and the water element. It is used to dodge or break love spells and suppress libido.
