Bittersweet nightshade (solanum dulcamara) is a poisonous perennial climbing vine found throughout temperate areas of the UK, Europe, North Africa, Asia, and North America. It shares the folk name “deadly nightshade” with belladonna due to its poisonous red berries and is also known as woody nightshade, felonwort, garden nightshade, nightshade vine, and scarlet berry. It’s purple flowers, red berries, and purple autumn foliage make for an attractive ornamental vine. The bark of mature vines is used in herbal medicine for external preparations such as poultices and ointments. Seeds were sustainably wild harvested in autumn 2024 by Bane Folk.
Growing Instructions: Sow indoors in early spring and transplant outdoors after risk of frost has passed or direct sow outdoors in fall or spring. This climbing vine prefers full sun to partial shade in moist, well draining soil. Can be grown in the ground or in containers. Not suitable as a houseplant.
