Balloon Flower (platycodon grandiflorus), aka Chinese bellflower, is a mildly toxic, medicinal, and edible perennial plant native to East Asia. It’s beautiful flowers give away that it is related to ornamental campanulas. Named balloon flower for the large flower buds that swell like a balloon before opening, the roots of this plant are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as a vegetable in traditional Asian foods –you may have eaten it in bibimbap and not realized it! Balloon flower root is also used in syrups, infused liqueurs, and teas. Balloon flower is toxic if ingested raw. The root requires special preparation before using in food and medicine.
Growing Instructions: Direct sow outdoors in fall, winter, or early spring. Prefers a cold period to germinate. Prefers full sun and loose, well drained soil with space for large roots. Space plants 30cm apart.
