What is a Poison Garden?
A poison garden is a garden intentionally featuring poisonous and baneful plants for their many uses or their peculiar beauty. Our garden features a mix of baneful, native, and medicinal herbs for the shop.

S.A. Lawless
Owner / Herbalist
S.A. Lawless is an author, artist, herbalist, gardener, forager, and outdoor educator living in rural Canada. She has been studying and practicing herbalism for 20 years, has been a gardener and forager of foods & medicines for well over 20 years, and has worked as a professional nature field guide for 15 years.
As a herbalist her focus is on low dose botanicals specializing in researching, growing, processing, working with and writing about medicinal nightshades and poisonous flower essences. Some of her biggest influences include herbalists Michael Moore and Robert Rogers along with ethnobotanists Nancy J. Turner and Wade Davis.
Background:
- 1999-2008: Culinary industry (yes, with the white coat and the tall white hat).
- 2003-2005: Apprenticed in herbalism with a nurse-herbalist in Victoria, BC.
- 2006-2011: Studied biogregional herbalism and Native American ethnobotany while living on a protected nature conserve in unceded Coast Salish territory (mentorship + self study).
- 2009: Launched first line of botanical oils, ointments, and perfumes –many of which are still available today in the shop.
- 2009 – Present: Natural health products manufacturing.
- 2011 – Present: Professional nature field guide teaching native plant, tree, and mushroom identification and ethnobotanical uses to local organizations, groups, schools, scouting programs, outdoor education programs, and via horticultural societies.
